The urban development that La Granja de San Ildefonso has experienced in the 20th century has left the Royal Factory of Glass and Crystal in a compromised situation, immersed among very disparate urban fabrics that generate multiple unresolved tensions around it, especially in the area of ​​its north façade.

After carrying out a series of urban reorganization operations, a large public space is created around the Royal Factory, thus recovering the idea of ​​transition between the countryside and the city that Carlos III envisioned for this area outside the city walls, and which will make it possible to relate the main architectural landmarks of the municipality, from the Factory to the Royal Palace.

As for the building itself, the demolition of its battered north façade will make it possible to turn its inner courtyard into a public square open to the new environment created. A plinth or semi-buried piece will run through the interior facades of the Royal Factory, connecting the pre-existence with the topography; while three new glass prisms, which adopt the modular rhythm of the neoclassical building in which they are inserted, will link the pre-existence with the new proposal.
